Dive Into CSS
Don’t be afraid!! Dive In! Many of us hide under tables to stay in our comfort zone. CSS is the most beautiful extension to html available to web designers and developers. The benefits of using css based design far outwheigh tables. Of course there will always be a place for tables out here..but that place is for structured data….maybe :)
Until recently, I was hesatant to dive in. Over the years, I have built many sites with table based designs due to fear of cross-browser performance. I would spend hours working on a new navigation and make it look beautiful, its working flawlessly — in firefox that is. Goto check it out in IE - $%@&. Look at the site in an older browser…not good. Although it didn’t look the same in all the browsers the links were still accessible. These problems occured because I had just scratched the surface of CSS. I’m not trying to say I still don’t throw a $%@& when checking browser support. I have now bit the bullet and decided to get ito the nity-gritty of pure css-based design. Yes, I still have sites out there with table design, but will get to them one at a time.. I still haven’t grasped the full spectrum of css, but thanks to the ever loving and growing community of accessibility freaks (i mean that in the nicest way possible) out there, my fear is wilting away. I will eventually begin writing tutorials on css, but for now I will leave it to the pro’s. Here are some resources that have helped me on my path:
